"when i sleep, i know no fear, no trouble, no bliss,” is taken from a quote in Russian Filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky’s psychological sci-fi classic Solaris from 1972.  The story follows a derelict space station that hovers near the titular planet’s sentient oceanic surface, where a team of scientists observes, records, and categorizes the phenomena through an elaborate nomenclature. As they experiment with an aggressive high-energy X-ray, the ocean responds by manifesting physical simulacra for the protagonist aboard, resulting in psychological trauma.

Centered around variations on Bach's "Chorale Prelude in F-Minor," a somber piece written for solo organ, the film’s 38-minute score, composed by Eduard Artemyev, considers themes of inadequacies of time and memory through an electronic soundscape reflecting the imaginary planet Solaris’ amorphous and mysterious form. Utilizing the technology of the ANS Synthesizer - that recorded graphical sounds from cinematography - Artemyev created artificial spectrograms by drafting sine waves on glass plates for the machine to interpret and synthesize sounds as the base for his composition.

This body of work explores themes of identity, perception as a conflation of narratives, spaces, histories, and ideas. Combining vocal science, performance, three-dimensional computer simulation software, gaming/VR, animation, and traditional painting techniques, through a lexicon of visual symbols and allusions, this project merges science, technology, and art with the visual thinking process that comes from the internet.

How can we re-define our encounters, both fictional and non-fictional, with a hyperreal world, in which culture and identity are fractured?
